Josie Van Veen Denver | Conifer CrossFit Coach

- CrossFit Coach -

 Josie Van Veen

Josie started her athletic career as a dancer. Having already toured through Europe with a dance company and theatre show by the age of 16, she decided to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts with and emphasis in Dance from the University of Amsterdam.

During college, she taught both theatre and dance classes to high school kids all around the country, toured with her own dance company, and taught workshops.

After graduating, Josie got a job dancing for the Southern California based dance company, “Unity Dance Ensemble”. After a year with them, she took a break from the arts and focused upon managing restaurants. During that time, she also picked up another sport; Muay Thai. After training the sport in both USA and the Netherlands, she was introduced to CrossFit.

Three years later, Josie continues to participate in the sport of CrossFit, has coached for two years, and is constantly integrating her knowledge of the body and conditioning with her classes…and loving every minute of it.

 Xavier Rodriguez

Xavier grew up In Southern California playing baseball and participating in Tae Kwon Do, both at the competitive level. Despite only weighing 120 lbs. by the end of his senior year of high school, Xavier was determined to play baseball at the collegiate level. After a month of training, the head coach of the college team told him he was “too small,” and needed to gain some weight.

Hoping to continue playing baseball despite this setback, Xavier was introduced to CrossFit in the summer of 2009 as a means to both build muscle and improve his overall fitness. His instant love of the sport led him to end his baseball career and pursue a career in the health/fitness industry. Xavier’s goal as both a coach and member of the CrossFit community is to help others pursue their goals both mentally and physically.

Jeff Schuette

Jeff’s CrossFit journey started in June 2014 after moving from Minnesota to Denver. Being new to the area, he joined a CrossFit gym to meet people and never looked back. Over the past four years, Jeff competed twice at the CrossFit Games as part of a team in addition to countless local competitions. Through CrossFit, Jeff met hundreds of people along the way, many of which quickly became lifelong friends. Over the years, he truly fell in love with the sport as both an athlete and a coach.

Before finding CrossFit and already interested in promoting wellness, Jeff obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science followed by a Master’s Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology. This led Jeff to work with individuals suffering from chronic disease.

After being exposed to CrossFit, he realized it could offer endless and scalable benefits to all levels of health/fitness. In Jeff’s career in Cardiac Rehabilitation, he regularly uses CrossFit style workouts. He loves the challenge coaching this sport offers and always strives to perfect his craft and create a positive impact on the community.

Kathleen Haggerty

Born in Las Vegas, NV, raised in Beaver Falls, PA, I have been active and on the go since I was young. I was born into a military family, dad being a fighter pilot and my mom being a master sergeant, I was taught at an early age to work hard. At the age of 3 I started gymnastics and never looked back and I ended my career at the age of 18 with one national championship win under my belt. Throughout those years I coached other gymnasts starting at the age of 5 to about 16 and loved being able to share my passion with them. After high school, I moved to Charlotte, NC in 2006 to attend Belmont Abbey College where I graduated in 2009 with my Bachelors in Business Management/Marketing. I made Charlotte my residence for a few years after that and then in 2014 I decided I wanted a challenge and moved to Denver, CO.

I fell in love with Crossfit in 2012 when a friend of mine moved back from South Korea where she had become a Crossfit addict and decided to share her passion with me. I made a huge life change and Crossfit was the biggest part. It not only got me into the greatest shape but it emotionally and mentally changed my life. I really love helping others feel happy and their best and by coaching Crossfit I get to do both of those. I hope to continue to share my passion with athletes and continue to grow as a coach for years to come.

- Olympic Lifting Coach -

Emily Smith

Emily began coaching weightlifting in 2011 while teaching high school science in Orlando, Florida. After moving to Colorado in the summer of 2015, she earned her CF-L1 and began coaching CrossFit. As an educator, coaching quickly and naturally became her full time job. In her younger years, Emily was a competitive dancer, with an affinity for tap, but the subjective nature of the sport fueled her involvement in her next athletic interests, weightlifting and distance running. She has always enjoyed the objective measure of success in these sports; the numbers on the clock and the numbers on the bar never lie, and this objective and measurable nature drove her to CrossFit.

Additionally, her experience in coaching youth weightlifting fueled her desire and love for coaching CrossFit. She was always inspired by her athletes’ ever-growing confidence and the effect that the sport had on their lives outside of the gym, and that’s what she loves most about CrossFit. Beyond the numbers measured at the gym, she finds no greater passion than helping individuals of all ages improve their physical, and more importantly, their mental health, through the community of CrossFit.
